CHARACTER(S): N/A
IC
NAME:AGE: 19
SUITABILITY: Jinx may be a bit of a loose cannon, but she's mentally and physically 19 and fully capable of consent.
CANON: Arcane: League of Legends
CANON POINT: End of season one.
WARNINGS: (I have these warnings on Jinx's journal to encourage people to opt-out if needed, but I want to give a heads up because the following topics will be covered in the app and in the sample threads.)
Mental health issues will make an appearance in most of Jinx's threads to some degree. Jinx's severe and untreated mental health issues combined with her own aggressively unhealthy ways of dealing with her problems mean that Jinx's threads may be a minefield of triggers on these topics.
Specifically, Jinx demonstrates symptoms of severe scizophrenia, including hallucinations, delusions, difficulty with attention and planning, paranoia, and volatile emotional states. Resulting from and in addition to those symptoms, she has depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, and she's likely to refer to these things in unhealthy and obscene ways. Her behavior and conversation will often include references to violence, property destruction, and substance abuse.
ABILITIES:
Chemically Altered Physiology: Jinx was injected with a large quantity of a synthetic substance called 'Shimmer', which provides her with enhanced durability and speed and rapid wound healing, though it damaged her already volatile mental stability. She's stronger and faster than a young woman of her size should be, with incredibly fast reaction speed, though she can only maintain her abilities in short bursts and she's still within normal human ranges in most areas. For example, she can lift about 200 pounds without difficulty, but can't carry that weight for long. She could maybe match an olympic sprinter in a quick race, but would quickly wear out against a distance runner.
Combat/Acrobatics: Jinx loves to fight, matching herself against some of the best fighters in the Connected Cities (Zaun and Piltover), and she has an extremely acrobatic style. Parkour is basically the default mode of transportation in Zaun, and Jinx's sister comments that Jinx has been doing death-defying parkour routes throughout Zaun since she was a small child.
Inventor: In canon, Jinx is an extremely talented inventor with a strong propensity toward chaos, violence, and property damage. (She likes bombs. She doesn't care who gets hurt.) She can and will be building homemade tricks and toys, though in the casino she'll mostly stick to glitter bombs and pranks that cause only a few minor injuries. I'll run it by the mods if she gets it into her head to do anything more than that.
VICES:
Reckless / Impulsive - Jinx doesn't think before she acts or speaks, which constantly causes problems for herself and others. She offers both affection and chaos on a hair trigger, such as when she gives an innocent bartender a big bear hug and then a moment later tosses a pink paint bomb in his direction as a 'tip'. In combat, she has a shoot first and ask questions later approach to things, and she never thinks through the consequences to her actions. When her actions cause problems, she reacts by creating more problems: after messing up and going rogue during an operation for her boss and father figure, Silco, he suggests that she take some time off. Instead, she decides she needs to prove herself, and does so by immediately going to set off a large and deadly explosion. In the process of that mayhem, she steals some dangerous technology which she then handles with total recklessness, tossing around the volatile and dangerous hextech like it's nothing but a shiny marble. Explosions from the thing repeatedly knock her on her ass and yet she just continues toying with it, doing things like dropping it into her drink and then suctioning it up against the end of her straw.
Violent/Amoral - Jinx gets a thrill from her own reckless behavior, and the more dangerous the thrill, the better. A large part of her failure to think through the consequences to her actions is that she simply doesn't care about most of those consequences. She doesn't see death and destruction as problems unless they happen to the very, very few people she cares about (most of whom are already dead). After the Progress Day explosion that she sets off, Silco rages at her because her actions caused the deaths of some enforcers, which causes significant political problems for him. Her response is a big, grinning 'yeah!' People died, but she isn't bothered by that. She had fun and stole a shiny treasure, so in her mind it was a success all around and everyone should stop being so grumpy.
Mental Instability - After causing an explosion as a child that directly results in the deaths of several of her friends and her previous father figure, Jinx's hold on reality becomes severely fractured. When we see her again as a young adult, she's haunted by hallucinations of her dead friends and her (assumed dead) sister. She has trouble distinguishing what is and isn't real--after encountering an enemy combatant who has pink hair like her sister, Jinx sees the stranger as her sister, then shoots her in the back, then starts shooting at everyone in the vicinity, ally and enemy alike. Another character describes it later as "it wasn't a mishap, she froze up and lost her shit," while Jinx later pitifully argues (to herself and the stuffed puppets she's made that look like her dead friends, largely because she keeps perceiving her dead friends as talking to her) that she just got "confused". Scenes showing her perspective often have sudden cuts, like reality slipped for her for a few second, and she often responds with non-sequiturs in conversation, or responds to things said by one of her dead friends. Her hallucinations bully her, amplifying her insecurities and nudging her toward the worst possible interpretation of things she sees and hears. Even when she's talking to real people, their words and actions are often overwritten by Jinx's hallucinations, so that we see a sort of cartoon caricature of the person saying something horrible to Jinx, messily drawn over the actual person standing in front of her, and we don't hear what the person actually said.
This is all further exacerbated by the "Shimmer" that saved her life and gave her some heightened physical abilities. Shimmer is known to have damaging effects on mental health, so that influenced her even farther toward extremes, moving her from 'mostly unhinged' to 'completely batshit', but most of Jinx's underlying mania was already present.
VIRTUES:
Eager to please - There's a lot of sweetness that still remains in Jinx, with a huge desire for affection. She's affectionate and generous toward the people that she likes, quick to pounce friends or total strangers with hugs. She desperately wants to prove herself and to make her friends and mentors proud of her, even if she usually chooses totally misguided ways to go about this. Cheerful and energetic, Jinx will be friendly toward anyone who hasn't outright proven an enemy, and is often friendly and generous even toward her enemies if she thinks it will be funny or interesting. She's quick to make friends, even if her volatile behavior makes it difficult for her to keep friends.
Inventive - Jinx has a genius-level intellect for handling magic and technology. We see the best minds in Piltover agonizing over the detailed calculations of how to handle hextech, while Jinx's massively disorganized mind seems to understand it on an instinctive level. A day after stealing some new, super high-level version of hextech that she's never encountered before, we see her explaining it (to a toy rabbit) as 'math-y, magic-y stuff' as she pops it into a device that she's built specifically to exploit it. It doesn't work on the first try (there are explosions), but it's still clear that within a day, Jinx's understanding of this technology she's just encountered is on par with the scientists who have been studying it for years, and within a week she has it weaponized into a cannon powerful enough to blow up a building from miles away. She's extremely creative and a genius inventor, even as heavily handicapped as she is by her mental illnesses. Her recklessness prevents her from considering consequences when it comes to any kind of practical planning ahead, but when it comes to heists or pranks, Jinx's strategic mind is unparalleled. Her schemes go off with a hitch every time, just as planned. (The problem is that these flawlessly-executed schemes are nearly always bad decisions with terrible consequences.)
SURVEY
▶ I REGULARLY MAKE NEW FRIENDS.
▷ 3. Mixed results. Jinx is outgoing and talkative, so she easily and cheerily will chat up someone new. Whether that person will want to stay friends with her past that initial meeting is more doubtful, since she's got a volatile and unhinged personality and her hobbies largely revolve around pranks, guns, and explosives.
▶ SEEING OTHER PEOPLE CRY MAKES ME WANT TO CRY TOO.
▷ 2. Yeeeees, though it's not necessarily through empathy. Jinx's emotions are constantly right at the surface, and she has a lot of trauma to cry about. If she saw someone else crying, she'd have about 20% chance of mocking them, 20% chance of reacting with friendly empathy, 60% chance of getting completely derailed into her own grief.
▶ I OFTEN MAKE A BACKUP PLAN FOR A BACKUP PLAN.
▷ 5. NO PLANS WE DIE LIKE CLOWNS.
▶ I USUALLY STAY CALM, EVEN WHEN UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE.
▷ 5. If Jinx is calm at any point, in any way, it is absolutely an eye of the storm situation and something is either figuratively or literally about to explode.
▶ I AM VERY SENTIMENTAL.
▷ 1. Jinx is exceedingly sentimental, with a tendency to latch onto even tiny things and blow them hugely out of proportion in terms of emotional significance. Once, when Jinx was small, her sister Vi pointed out out a toy stuffed bunny that she had lost when a bully had thrown it up onto an electric line, and Vi had never been able to get it down. After they were separated, Jinx grew up, found a way to get the toy down, and kept it jealously for years after that, treating the toy with obsessive fixation because it represented all her grief and rage with regards to her lost sister.
▶ EVEN A SMALL MISTAKE CAN CAUSE ME TO DOUBT MY OVERALL ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE.
▷ 1. Even a small mistake can usually trigger Jinx into a total emotional meltdown over her past. She does usually bounce back quickly with a fiercely determined "I'll show them, I'll show everyone!" attitude, but will crash straight back into self-loathing despair a moment later if given a new trigger for it.
▶ I AM MORE INCLINED TO FOLLOW MY HEAD THAN MY HEART.
▷ 5. Jinx has never in life followed her head when it comes to anything. She will follow her heart, her stomach, her lust, a stray butterfly, or literally anything else in order to avoid actually thinking about her decisions.
▶ I AM PRONE TO WORRYING THAT THINGS WILL TAKE A TURN FOR THE WORSE.
▷ 1/5. Jinx is usually simultaneously both extremes on this. The self-destructive, self-loathing narrative in her head given literal voice by her hallucinations is always worried that things will take a turn for the worse and that she'll ruin everything forever, "just like always". At literally the same time, or vacillating wildly between extremes from second to second, Jinx would rather blow off all worry and laugh away consequences, taking a "psh it'll be fine" approach no matter how bad things get.
▶ I ENJOY WATCHING PEOPLE ARGUE.
▷ 1. Yes. Enormously. Shamelessly. She finds it hilarious. She will bring popcorn. She may throw the popcorn at the arguing people if they aren't arguing hard enough.
▶ I TEND TO AVOID DRAWING ATTENTION TO MYSELF.
▷ 5. Who's got two thumbs, neon graffiti paint, and a full arsenal of glitter bombs? It's JINX!
▶ I OFTEN DO THINGS AT THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT.
▷ 4, only because doing things at the last possible moment would mean not doing them right this moment. Jinx is only ever going to do things Right Now or Never (or Never until she's reminded about them again, in which case it's again either Right Then or Never).
▶ I FIND IT EASY TO EMPATHIZE WITH A PERSON WHOSE EXPERIENCES ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM MINE.
▷ 5. Jinx is pretty hit and miss with empathy even with people whose experiences are very similar to her own. People with different experiences are completely alien to her.
▶ I BECOME BORED OR LOSE INTEREST WHEN THE DISCUSSION GETS HIGHLY THEORETICAL.
▷ 1. This in regards to a girl who refers to even her own inventions as "math-y, magic-y stuff". Jinx becomes bored or loses interest easily even when a discussion is eminently practical. If a discussion is highly theoretical, she is certain to obnoxiously interrupt.
▶ I RARELY FEEL INSECURE.
▷ 5. "average person feels insecure 3 times a day" factoid actually just statistical error. average person feels insecure 1-2 times per day. spiders Jinx, who lives in a cave & feels insecure over 10,000 times each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted.
I jest but ... this isn't actually an exaggeration. Jinx deals with constant intrusive thoughts.
▶ I AM STILL BOTHERED BY MISTAKES I MADE A LONG TIME AGO.
▷ 1. Jinx is berated on an hourly basis by the hallucinated personifications of mistakes she made a long time ago. An enormous part of this is the repetition of what her sister Vi told her, before they were separated--that the deaths of her friends and her father figure were all her fault, because she's a jinx. Jinx (birth name Powder) has made that her identity, claiming it, but the fault lines of that insecurity run deep.
